Strange problem starting up. Postgres 7.0.

I can get the postmaster to start up manually under Using postgres 7.0 But I cannot get the startup script to start up postgres.

I am running under Yellowdog Linux 1.2. The errors I see are as follows This was clipped from my messages logfile.
