Two PostgreSQL opportunities in Vienna, Austria / (Architect DB2→PostgreSQL & PostgreSQL/EDB DBA)

I’m currently supporting a public enterprise customer in Vienna; Austria and we are looking for two PostgreSQL seniors.

Both roles are German-speaking and on-site in Vienna part of the week. You can apply for one role or both, depending on your experience and interest.

Project 1 – Senior PostgreSQL Architect (DB2 → PostgreSQL introduction)
Goal: Design and lead the introduction of PostgreSQL and the migration from an existing DB2 environment.

Key responsibilities:

* Analyse and optimise existing DB2 administration processes
* Propose adjustments and a target operating model for PostgreSQL (incl. clear split between DBA and development responsibilities)
* Define and document operational and maintenance guidelines for PostgreSQL:
* Backup & recovery concepts
* Monitoring and performance tuning processes (including tool selection and setup)
* Security guidelines (roles, privileges, compliance, standardisation)
* Integrate PostgreSQL into the existing IT landscape:
* Alignment with reporting, ETL processes, and existing tools
* Advice on compatibility with current applications
* Train and coach internal development and admin teams:
* PostgreSQL basics and differences vs. DB2
* Best practices for data modelling and queries in PostgreSQL
* Performance optimisation, HA, backup/restore
* Creation of training materials and internal knowledge base
* Support for the migration and adaptation of existing applications:
* Analysis and adaptation of SQL statements and stored procedures
* Guidance on PostgreSQL-specific features (e.g. JSONB, window functions)
* Support for planning and executing the data migration, ensuring data integrity and minimising downtime

Project 2 – PostgreSQL / EDB Database Administrator
Goal: Ensure stable, secure, and performant PostgreSQL/EDB database operations (production, test, development) for a public enterprise customer.

Key responsibilities:

* Administer, extend, and monitor PostgreSQL/EDB database environments (prod/test/dev)
* Set up, operate and continuously improve backup & restore solutions
* Install and maintain systems on the OS level (mainly Linux), including provisioning and configuration of new systems
* Keep systems stable, secure, and performant, including:
* Performance tuning and troubleshooting in an enterprise environment
* Operation and optimisation of load balancing solutions such as HAProxy, PgBouncer or similar
Profile:

* Several years of experience administering PostgreSQL databases, ideally including EDB (EnterpriseDB)
* Strong experience with database backup & recovery strategies
* Solid track record in performance tuning, troubleshooting, and debugging in enterprise environments
* Experience with PostgreSQL load balancing / connection pooling (e.g. HAProxy, PgBouncer)
* Very good Linux administration skills (Red Hat, Ubuntu)
* Fluent German (min. B2) and good English
* Team-oriented, proactive, and used to working in larger enterprise environments
