postgres binary blobs

I'm having headaches on how to implement binary data strage with postgres and
PHP. The postgres PHP manual kind of sucks in respect of the blobs stuff.

I mean, at no place does it say that the data that is going to be inserted
should go in this or that lo column. What if I have lots of lo columns in a
database, how those PHP know where I want it to insert the data?

Well, hope you guys can help me, because I just don't get it. :-(
