This will work on 2.2 and 2.4 linux kernels (and maybe earlier ones),
so you should be alright.

I have attached same pg_hba.conf and pg_ident.conf files that will
illustrate what is possible. I am currently running 7.3, but I think
it should work the same on 7.2.
