I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but perhaps if you
look at the page http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/postgresql/ which
gives instructions for install and command to get the postmaster running.

I have the opposite problem, the postmaster is running and has been for
about a month. I don't know how to turn it off and on again so that it
isn't running when I don't need it.
