Any chance you can you look at some bugs first please?

- The threading issue

- Phillipe Lang's encoding issue

spend some time trying to solve this a while back, though I was quite
busy at the time. I didn't get very far :-(

- The blank varchar/text fields problem that a few people have seen with
some applications
