PostgreSQL Database Engineer / Operational DBA [San Francisco, CA]

Position:

The Database Engineer will have the primary responsibility for the
performance and integrity of MyNewPlace's key asset--its rental property
database. He/She will assist in all aspects of developing and
maintaining the rental listing database and will be responsible for
monitoring its operation and optimizing its performance. This position
is an ideal opportunity for a talented, energetic individual to have a
significant impact in the early development stages of a new online real
estate business that is founded by industry veterans, well capitalized,
and backed by a leading Silicon Valley venture firm.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Working closely with the Technology and Web Site Operations teams, the
Database Engineer will be responsible for database design and
development, as well as monitoring, tuning, and performance
optimization. This is a great position for a Database Programmer with
interest in Database Administration, or a DBA who also like to be
involved in application development.

Specific activities and areas of responsibility include:

* Contribute to the design and development of the database powering
the MyNewPlace suite of web applications.
(Resin/Struts/Spring/PostgreSQL on Linux)
* Develop stored procedures to enable mission-critical apartment
searching, rebate tracking, and back-office billing features
* Monitor database performance and implement both query and design
optimizations
* Develop and implement strategies for backup, replication, log
maintenance
* Develop/deploy internal monitoring and reporting tools
* Create scripts and procedures for performing bulk operations on the
MyNewPlace listing database such as geocoding, de-duping, and other data
massaging

Depending on the skills and interests of the individual, they may also
be asked to contribute to other initiatives such as:

* Assist with other web site operations activities (scripting,
monitoring, app deployment)
* implement data warehousing and business analytics
* integrate internal tracking databases with web analytics
* Obtain and incorporate auxiliary data (geographic data, prospect
lists, etc.)
* Work with clients to obtain rental listing data exports and load
into the MyNewPlace database
* tool and application development

As with any startup, the individual will be expected to function well in
a team environment and be prepared to assist in all aspects of the
business, not just their areas of primary responsibility.

Required Skills and Experience:

You must have prior experience with PostgreSQL to be considered for this
position.

Specifically your skills and experience must include:

* A BA or BS in a relevant discipline from a major university; and/or
highly relevant work experience.
* Good interpersonal and communication skills
* 5 or more years experience with database development including
o Expert knowledge of SQL and stored procedure coding
o Excellent database design skills
o Demonstrated experience with data loading and data transformation
(ETL)
o Experience with database tuning and performance optimization
o Some database administration experience and an inclination to grow
in this area
* 3 or more years of work in high volume, high availability commercial
environments developing and maintaining databases that power web
applications
* 2 or more years of experience working with PostgreSQL (can
substitute some years of Oracle, but must have at least a year working
with Postgres professionally)
* Experience working with source code control (preferably CVS)

Additional highly desired skills and experience:

* Data warehouse design and development experience
* Experience with Java web application development on Resin, Tomcat,
or similar app server
* GIS experience such as mapping, geocoding & address standardization
* Experience with web analytics software and data

The individual must be a self-starter and able to prosper in a
relatively unstructured work environment. Experience in working in a
high growth environment is also highly desirable. The individual must
value working in a closely-knit team environment where they will work
relatively independently, but in close cooperation with personnel from
the IT an Operations sides of the business.

MyNewPlace.com is a new pay for performance Internet Listing Service
(ILS) founded by members of the former senior management team of
AllApartments/SpringStreet, the leading apartment search service on the
internet before it was sold to HomeStore in July of 1999. The service is
designed to assist apartment property owners in leasing their apartment
buildings to tenants who can search for and compare available rentals on
its web site. Prospective tenants are able to access the site free of
charge via the Internet, and are eligible to earn a rebate when they
rent from properties that pay an advertising fee to MyNewPlace.
MyNewPlace is located in downtown San Francisco.

Compensation:

Permanent positions will pay competitive base salary with bonus based on
performance. Permanent positions also include the potential for
