Sorry for bumping old thread. And thanks to Hackorum, I now know this thread started exactly 10 years ago. After several patch attempts, it's still on my TODO list :)

That quoted message was the best career choice I ever made. I can't imagine a more rewarding job than working on Postgres. But it's not just about a career - I entered a community.

Just look at this! 10 years ago, after attending an inspiring conference, I posted a proposal to pgsql-hackers and boarded a plane home. Upon landing, I had a response in my inbox. A response from one of the most knowledgeable experts in the field! Several hours later, I was invited back to the conference to discuss the proposal with other experts.

If anyone reading this is considering hacking on Postgres: if I weren't already doing what I do, I'd advise my past self to start right now. It might seem that data management is a solved problem. Yes, Postgres is a mature database. But even after several decades, it's being developed rapidly, the community grows day by day, and we face new challenges constantly.

Thanks to everyone here who helped me learn. I'm very grateful for your expertise and patience. I know there's still a lot to learn, to study, to invent, to design, to build, to fix, and to hack on.

P.S. That GiST page layout? Ofc I will return to the idea. Eventually. But if anyone want to work on this - I'd be happy to collab.
