oprofile stats would be enlightening, perhaps.

I'm particularly interested in why 7.4 is behaving better than newer
versions --- that does not compute ;-). Have you checked that the same
query plan is being used by 7.4 and the newer versions? Could you get
oprofile results for both versions?
