Problem with startup

I started the postgres service by 1. logging in as Postgres user and
then typing /usr/sbin/rcpostgresql start...it showed that the service
has started...but when i type psql or any database command , nothing
happens on the konsole, its like the console freezes totally...why
should this happen??
