Database Programmer (SAP IV)

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home of three Nobel laureates,
is an independent, nonprofit research institution dedicated to the
development and advancement of biomedical research to eliminate cancer
and other potentially fatal diseases. Recognized internationally for its
pioneering work in bone-marrow transplantation, the Center's four
scientific divisions collaborate to form a unique environment for
conducting basic and applied science. The Hutchinson Center, in
collaboration with its clinical and research partners, the University of
Washington and Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center, is the
only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in

Responsibilities:

The database programmer is a key member of the team that supports the
relational databases at SCHARP. The database programmer is responsible
for developing, implementing and tuning data models based on SCHARP's
business requirements and writing code to allow easy access to this
data. S/he is also responsible for developing strategies for data
synchronization, integrity and standardization, and for serving as a
backup database administrator.

Major Duties:

1. Analyze and translate business requirements into data models.
2. Design, implement, test and document programs that interface
with the relational database.
3. Develop and ensure proper usage of data modeling, naming &
description standards.
4. Develop and apply strategies for data synchronization, update,
and integrity.
5. Guide development teams in system database design.
6. Review and tuning of data model for performance improvement.
7. Serve as a third member of the database administration team.
Responsibilities in this arena include tasks such as creating users and
maintaining access control, checking backup scripts, and monitoring
database functionality.
8. Other duties as required

The ideal candidate will poses the following qualifications:

* Two years experience data modeling.
* Three years experience with relational databases. Postgres
and/or MS SqlServer preferred.
* Experience with at least one of the following programming
languages: perl, java, VBA, php
* Experience analyzing the technical needs of an individual or
group and researching and recommending solutions.
* Self motivated learner.
* Effective communication skills.
* Good organizational skills and the ability to prioritize daily
tasks and projects.
