/usr/local/bin/postgres -D /usr/local/pgsql/data -d5 is what
I tried along with the setting of
silent_mode = off # DO NOT USE without syslog or
in postgresql.conf

So, what am I missing from the 'good old days' of 6.1 where I could
see every checkpoint and command entered?
