== PostgreSQL Weekly News - August 24th 2004 ==

As indicated in the last weekly news, we have bundled and released 7.2.5,
7.3.7, and 7.4.5. These releases address a critical bug and all users on
these branches are strongly encouraged to upgrade to their respective latest
release. For full upgrade information, please read the release notes
available with each release.

A good stream of bug reports flowed in over the last week as beta testing
continued on. Several thread safety issues were worked out on multiple
platforms. An issue with handling rowtypes containing dropped columns was
fixed. A few bugs in numbering centuries and millennia with timestamptz
oriented data were corrected. Some compile issues in contrib/fuzzstrmatch
were cleaned up. The pg_subtransaction code was cleaned up a little bit which
should help remove some possible extra bloating.

Work continued on rounding out features as well. An ALTER INDEX command was
added for changing owner, tablespace, or name of an index. Dollar quoting
support was added into pg_restore. Stefan Kaltenbrunn submitted a very large
patch rounding out tab-completion support on more than a dozen commands in
psql.

We also saw some more work on the documentation this past week. Several bits
of broken SGML were fixed up in the docs. An incorrect example for
quote_ident was fixed. The example code for Global Values in pl/perl was
spruced up. Finally there is also a new deprecated features section included
as well. Just a reminder that anyone is welcome to read through the beta
documentation and submit corrections or clarifications; it is a great way for
non-coders to get involved in the project.
