The developers continued rounding out the new features in an effort to
get beta 1, now tentatively scheduled for August 1st, out the door. Most of
the patch queue has been applied, and parts of both PITR and nested
transactions have started working their way into CVS, so it shouldn't be too
much longer.

Some of the feature rounding out this week include more additions to
psql output, like adding permissions and descriptions for schemas and
tablespaces. We also saw improvements to initdb so that it can now detect
locale/encoding mismatches when they occur and it can also pick a suitable
encoding automatically if none is specified. Also on the list was a patch to
allow the new plperl implementation to build against win32, fixing issues
with back/forward slashing and updating the linker config for mingw.

Christopher Kings-Lyne did a lot of work on pg_dump this past week,
trying to nail down all of the outstanding issues when dumping from older
databases. The list of items fixed include is quite long, but highlights
include changing output to use ALTER OWNER commands instead of SET SESSION
AUTHORIZATION, moving all GRANT and REVOKE commands to the end of the dump,
dumping of ALTER USER commands for the cluster owner, dumping ALTER OWNER for
the public schema when needed, and the removal of some spurious commenting.
Christopher plans to do some regression testing against all of the 7.x
versions of PostgreSQL, however if you have complex schema living in one of
these older versions you are encouraged to test your dumping as soon as
possible in order to ensure backward compatibility.

Two other quick notes on the PostgreSQL website. We have added a
French translation of the FAQ, thanks to Lelarge Guillaume, available at

Polish PostgreSQL community website (http://www.postgresql.org.pl/) which is
