Well, I'm assuming you meant 1GB of ram, not 1MB :)

Check a ps auxw to see what is running. Perhaps X is running gobbling up
your precious mem. But still.. with 1GB there should be virtually no
swap activity.

How busy is the DB? How many connections?

and is sort_mem set high?
