Problem Description:

Not much else to say. I've compiled 6.4.2. as user postgres
(that is not as root) and installed it
but when I try to initialize it it crashes and dumps core.

Compile 6.4.2 on an Irix 6.4 system user account (e.g postgres)
install
try to run initdb
