These must be within #if's that prevent them from being seen ...
you'll need to figure out what exactly. On HPUX we use
CPPFLAGS="-D_XOPEN_SOURCE_EXTENDED"
to gain access to some symbols we need, and I'll bet something
similar is needed on AIX.
