I check for return code 0 in my scripts...
$PG_DUMP --schema=${SCHEMA} ${DBNAME} > ${TMPFILE}
RETVAL=$?
if [ ${RETVAL} -eq 0 ] ; then
echo 'Done!'
else
echo "Error! Return value was ${RETVAL}"
fi
