problem with initdb

I've just installed Linux and the packaged postgres ( an older version, I think) When I try to run initdb, I get the an error message telling me that it can't read block 0 of the pg_variable and can't create a template. I think I have all the permissions set up correctly. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong.
