Isn't Oracle's
COMMIT WRITE NOWAIT;
basically the same - ad hoc async commit? Though their idea of backend do not maps
exactly to postgrsql's idea. The closest thing is per session async commit:
ALTER SESSION SET COMMIT_WRITE='NOWAIT';
