Actually, I think it needs to be "$POSTOPTS" (double quoted), to preserve

peter ~$ opts="-N -o '-F   -S'"
peter ~$ eval ./argprint $opts
-F -S
peter ~$ eval ./argprint "$opts"
-F   -S
peter ~$ cat argprint

for arg do
  echo "$arg"
