But simple HTML would do the trick for Excel and even OpenOffice
can read this:

<body>
<table>
<tr>
<th>column1</th><th>column2</th>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>...
and so on.
Or maybe native OpenOffice, which is XML (in a Zip archive)
Schould not be so hard. (This would help maintaining type
information)
