Cool neighborhood, with a lot of geek appeal. Right next door to the
Japantown center, essentially a 60s era indoor-mall (but without the
usual national chains) which includes the Kinokuniya bookstore (much
manga). This is just across the street from "New People", a 90ish,
japanese-style vertical mall, where they show new anime releases in the
basement theater. There are too many good restaurants to name (though
oddly enough, no stellar sushi places).

Public transit from the airport is indeed "multi-modal": BART to
Montgomery station, where you can get the 38 Geary bus across town.
On the plus side, the 38 bus runs frequently, and it's 24 hours (which
is more than you can for BART). There's always a tradeoff between
transit convenience and being somewhere worth being, and this one
strikes me as a good deal.

(And Josh knows what he's talking about, re: Foster City. I found it
was hard to get SF perl booth volunteers who were willing to go to San
Jose for OSCON, no less. Distances are relative on the SF peninsula,
it's easier to get people to go north than south.)
