== PostgreSQL Weekly News - August 9th 2004 ==

Those who have been watching will notice that in the last week we have gone
from getting ready for a 7.5 beta release to the announcement of the first
8.0.0 beta package earlier today. Why the sudden change? Well, actually there
had been some on and off discussion about making this an 8.0 release for
quite a while, and after a brief discussion on -hackers, most agreed that
given the number of large features added, and the amount of backend code that
had been modified, an 8.x numbering scheme seemed appropriate at this time.
This also means that we will need some extra diligence in testing this new
release, so I have included a link to the beta announcement below with links
and other information so that you can begin beta testing as soon as possible.

Of course with the wrapping of a beta release comes some furious bug fixing
and cleanup right before the wrap. Areas of the code cleaned up include a fix
in the placement of the savepointLevel test, a fix in dependency checking
during ALTER COLUMN TYPE, several fixes in array handling dealing with
creating multidemensional arrays and whitespace handling, adjustment to the
lower bound for arrays of AclItems (from zero to one), clean up in psql's
latex format, and several cleanups in the zic code.

New code added includes the addition of new function for controlling label
files used with backups, and the additon of a built-in log rotation programr.
There were also many, many changes to the docs in various sections to be
brought up to date with the world of 8.0. In perticular, those looking into
beta testing PITR should be aware that the documentation for PITR is now much
more complete, so you will want to refer to a copy of the 8.0 docs (included
with the source code) when testing this new feature.
