There weren't too many changes in the code this week, but that didn't
stop it from being busy. There are a number of updates for proposed features
for 7.5, but first let's take a look through the list of changes committed to
code this past week. Some hardwiring in information_schema was replaced with
a function to generate numerical series with variable step sizes. The GUC
options sort_mem and vacuum_mem were renamed to work_mem and
maintenance_work_mem to better reflect their uses in the backend, and
coinciding with the change btree index creation and initial foreign-key
validation were modified to use maintenance_work_mem. Finally, some code for
a cost-based vacuum delay feature was implemented.

We also saw quite a bit of cleanup pertaining to win32 signal handling
including the removal of duplicate signal definitions from pqsignal.h,
replacing pqkill() with kill() and redefinng kill() in Win32, using ereport()
in place of fprintf() in some error handling in pqsignal.c, exporting
pg_queue_signal() and making use of it where necessary, adding a console
control handler for Ctrl-C and similar handling on Win32, and implementing a
WaitForSingleObjectEx() in CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS() on Win32, which should give
us a working implementation for query cancelling Win32.

Discussions on Point-In-Time-Recovery heated up again, with the result
being some additional infrastructure put in place for this subproject. If you
are interested in helping out with development, a pgsql-hackers-pitr mailing
list has been created, and Bruce Momjian has created a project status page
available at http://candle.pha.pa.us/main/writings/pgsql/project/pitr.html.
We also saw some progress on two-phase commit with the posting of a patch
adding basic support to PostgreSQL by Heikki Linnakangas. Full details are
available in the archives at
http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-hackers/2004-02/msg00261.php, folks are
encouraged to test out the patch and provide feedback.
