I agree with leaving it be in contrib. The lesson has been learned,
and contrib has certainly gone out in _much_ worse shape, with code that
wouldn't even compile.
Open source code is like a natural resource, it's the result of providing
food and sunshine to programmers, and then staying out of their way.
