OK, I downloaded the source and followed the directions from here
( and when I run the
command: /usr/local/pgsql/bin/postmaster -i -D /usr/local/pgsql/data
>logfile 2>&1 &

I get the error:
[1] 28156
bash: logfile: Permission denied

I try to createdb anyway and I get:
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql: error in loading shared libraries:
cannot open sh
ared object file: No such file or directory
createdb: database creation failed
[1]+ Exit 1 /usr/local/pgsql/bin/postmaster -i -D
/usr/local/pgsql/data>logfile 2>&1

I do not know what to do from this point. I would have thought if this was
missing I would have had an error on compile.

(Hence my infatuation with RPMs :) )
