This is almost certainly the "pid file does nto go away" issue. Manually remove the .pid file in the data directory, and start the service.

I beleive this bug is fixed in beta-2.

Hi,

We've been using Postgres for about a year. I recently installed the beta 8.0 Windows version on my XP laptop. It worked fine for about a week, but now the service will not start.

Here's the message I receive:

Any ideas?
