It sounds like you assume one should use Linux in the first place.
Basically, it all comes down to your requirements. I'm not in any way
intending to start a holy war on OS preferences, but for *my* needs,
Linux is not sufficient.

Choose your OS to run your apps and meet your experience. If you
don't have experience with any suitable OS, then go with one for which
you can readily get support (either paid or from friends, associates,
etc.) If neither of these apply, the roll a 20-sided die and make
your selection that way.

Personally, I use FreeBSD because it works the way I like, is
incredibly stable, and upgrades the way I like (no version number
soup). I've also used other OSes for other reasons, but these days
I'm the boss so I decide. ;-)
