pgadmin II and firewall settings

I'm having a problem getting pgadmin II to connect completely through a
firewall.

I have set up a filter for Postgresql aloowing inbound and outbound traffic
on port 5432 in TCP and UDP, but I keep having a connection problem unless
the furewall is wide open both ways.

I do not claim great expertise here, but I can't find a clue as to what the
problem is.

The traffic is very limited - http, https, ssh, dns, smtp, and postgres, so
know exactly what ports are being allowed through.

Any suggestions not involving my ancestry or the marital status of my
parents woudl be appreciated.
