-fno-strict-aliasing -fwrapv  -D_GNU_SOURCE    conftest.c -lz -ledit
-lcrypt -ldl -lm  >&5
configure:21441: $? = 0
configure:21461: result: yes

Manually repeating without -ledit seemed to make the same difference
