i'm having a trouble when installing the postgresql 7.2 on FreeBSD 4.2.

at the installation guide i must do the following:

./configure
gmake
su
gmake install
adduser postgres
mkdir /usr/local/pgsql/data
chown postgres /usr/local/pgsql/data
su - postgres
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/initdb -D /usr/local/pgsql/data
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/postmaster -D /usr/local/pgsql/data >logfile 2>&1 &
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/createdb test
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql test

but when i run the command /usr/local/pgsql/bin/createdb test
i got this error message :
psql: could not connect to server: Connection refused
Is the server running locally and accepting
connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"?
createdb: database creation failed
[2]+ Exit 2 /usr/local/pgsql/bin/postmaster -D
/usr/local/pgsql/data >logfile 2>&1

it seems that the the postmaster didn't run, so anybody have any idea to
help my problem? i'm really expect and would be very grateful for
it.
