Thank you, I've enabled logging,
but couldn't see anything suspicious there.

Also the 60%-120% CPU-eating postmaster
processes are now suddenly gone.

I suspect this is some bug in the
postgresql-server-8.1.21-1.el5_5.1 delivered
with CenOS 5.5/64 bit, because I don't
have many simultaneous users ( < 100)
and not that many queries.

I'll try to upgrade to 8.4.4 as described at
http://www.pgrpms.org/ later. I'm a bit confused
though that they do not support "yum update" anymore
(I think that worked earlier with PGDG....)
