I didn't test on XP, but I was using f5 most of yesterday whilst hacking
on the debugger and it was working just fine for me too. I've been
using it almost every day since it was written in fact!!

Do you perhaps have a programmable keyboard on which you've mistakenly
programmed a macro on F5? Or perhaps another key is stuck, changing the
effect of the function key?
