The following bug has been logged online:

Bug reference: 6137
Logged by: Ahmet Tekelioglu
Email address: vtam370(at)yahoo(dot)com
PostgreSQL version: 8.04
Operating system: Ubuntu 10.04, 11.04
Description: apt-get install postgresql doesn't save conf files
Details:

Originally, the configuration files such as postgresql.conf, pg_hba.conf
were saved under the directory /etc/postgresql/8.4/main where they could be
edited and saved. Today, even though I am installing qith apt-get install
postgresql as before, that directory and its contents have disappeared.
