How about textin(byteaout(bytea_value))? Or a function that performs
the conversion by magic:
CREATE FUNCTION bytea2text(bytea) RETURNS text AS $$
BEGIN
RETURN $1;
END;
$$ LANGUAGE plpgsql IMMUTABLE STRICT;
