Oh, interesting --- digest mode. I think in top-posting, it is
important to clearly show where your posting stops. If not, you get the
comment, then a "XXX Wrote:" which isn't a very clear delimiter. Is
there some other way I could mark the end of a top comment?

In my case, when I top post, I need to retain the entire text so people
will recognize it.
