And pg_ctl status seems normal :-

/usr/lib/postgresql/9.1/bin/pg_ctl -D /var/lib/postgresql/9.1/main/
status

returns:-

pg_ctl: server is running (PID: 1040)
/usr/lib/postgresql/9.1/bin/postgres "-D" "/var/lib/postgresql/9.1/main"
"-c" "config_file=/etc/postgresql/9.1/main/postgresql.conf

So where else to look?
