Thanks to all those that sent messages to help with my TCPIP socket problem.
I still cannot get the -i switch to work with postmaster but was able to correct the problem by placing tcpip_socket = 1 in my postgresql.conf file. Thanks Nick for sending me that link to the JDBC info (http://www.fankhausers.com/postgresql/jdbc/#driver_install). That is where I read that it is best to turn on the IP socket in this manner if you are running PostgreSQL 7.1 or higher.
