BEDFORD, Mass. – November 2nd, 2011 – EnterpriseDB, the leading
worldwide provider of PostgreSQL and Oracle compatibility products and
services, today announced Postgres Plus® Connector for Hadoop, which
allows massive amounts of data from a Postgres Plus® Advanced Server
(PPAS) or PostgreSQL database to be accessed, processed and analyzed
in a Hadoop cluster.  The Postgres Plus Connector for Hadoop allows
programmers to process large amounts of SQL-based data using their
familiar MapReduce constructs.
Hadoop is an open-source distributed processing framework with a
number of useful applications including distributed text searching,
web access log stats, machine learning, statistical machine
translation and more.  Many enterprises deploy Hadoop alongside their
legacy IT systems, which allows them to combine old data and new data
sets in powerful new ways.  As a result, there is a growing demand for
a data bridge between Hadoop and SQL databases to tap Hadoop’s ability
to provide fast, reliable analysis of both structured and unstructured
data. Hadoop combined with PPAS or PostgreSQL enables users to perform
real time queries with Postgres and non-real time CPU intensive
analysis.  Using the Postgres Plus Connector for Hadoop, users can
load SQL data to Hadoop, process it and even push the results back to
Postgres.
“With Postgres Plus Connector for Hadoop, Postgres Plus Advanced
Server users can tap into the massive processing, storage, and
analysis power of Hadoop,” said Karen Tegan Padir, vice president of
products and marketing at EnterpriseDB. “Our connector is ideal for
companies committed to the business imperatives best served by their
traditional SQL systems but who want to integrate the new capabilities
and benefits offered by Hadoop.”
EnterpriseDB has created the Postgres Plus Connector for Hadoop by
extending the Pig platform (an engine for executing data flows in
parallel on Hadoop) and using an EnterpriseDB JDBC driver to allow
users the ability to load the results of a SQL query into Hadoop and
copy data from Hadoop back into Postgres tables.
On November 11, 2011, EnterpriseDB will open a private Postgres Plus
Connector for Hadoop beta program for customers and partners. This
will be followed by a public webcast “PostgreSQL and Hadoop – an
Introduction to Postgres Plus® Connector for Hadoop.” To register for
the webcast, visit www.enterprisedb.com/postgresql-hadoop.
