Database Administrator

(12 month contract)

POSITION OVERVIEW

With Global Applications upcoming changes to ensure better alignment with
the business units, an opportunity has arisen for a Database Administrator.
This role will report to the Global Applications Manager and will commence
in August 2004 for a 12 month contract period.

This position is primarily responsible for the day-to-day technical
leadership of the Global Applications database environment, including span
development, architecture, quality assurance and ongoing operations.

To be successful in this role you will need extensive experience as a
Database Administrator, combined with a comprehensive knowledge of
PostgreSQL and MYSQL Database architecture. Other requirements include a
comprehensive knowledge of database design, deployment and recovery
techniques and Linux Operating Systems.

We are looking for a person with excellent organisational and time
management skills with the ability to meet deadlines whilst handling
multiple projects. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are
essential, including proven proficiency in communicating with various
entities of the company at a local and an international level. Youll also
have the capability to give feedback to clients and utilise your good
problem solving skills to create solutions to design obstacles. The ability
to work autonomously and effectively as part of a team is also a requirement
of the role.

Job Description - June 2004

Position: Database Administrator

Location: Australia

Responsible to: Global Applications Manager

Communicates & Cooperates with: Global Applications, Global IT Operations,
Content Services Unit, Digital Publishing Unit, Consumer Direct Unit,
Lonely Planet Images, the Program, IT staff and other business units as
required.

Position Overview:

Lonely Planet's Global Applications department is responsible for the
design, development and maintenance of software components, digital
products, database driven and other web applications, servicing the various
business units throughout Lonely Planet.

The Database Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day technical
leadership of the Global Applications database environment. These tasks
span development, architecture, quality assurance and ongoing operations.

Key Result Areas:

" Evaluate and improve existing database architecture, focussing towards its
next generation, including clustering, replication, high availability and
optimisation
" Undertake the evaluation, testing, implementation and maintenance of
database products and services
" Application and database design (particularly utilisation of ColdFusion
and Java application architecture)
" Work with Developers and Analyst during the process of converting
requirements for applications, whether enhancement or project, into an
approved system for delivery
" Conduct technical reviews in conjunction with Developers
" Undertake the development and deployment of database standards, processes
and procedures
" Provide guidance and support to Developers and Unix Administrators
" Assist with application development tasks as appropriate
" Team coordinated project development

" Work as part of the LP community to create a positive, tolerant and
harmonious work environment
" Deal with all staff in a helpful, courteous and respectful manner
" Communicate ideas which may improve the efficiency, performance or

" Solid skills and experience as a Database Administrator
" Comprehensive knowledge of PostgreSQL and MySQL database architecture
" Proficiency of database design and deployment
" In-depth knowledge of database recovery techniques
" Experience with tuning and optimising database performance
" Proficiency of database design
" Proficiency of Linux Operating System
" Initiative and the ability to work independently
" Excellent organisational skills, to manage several projects at the same
time
" Ability to communicate with different entities of the company, both
locally and internationally
" Ability to give feedback and come up with solutions to solve design
problems
" Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desirable:
" Good knowledge of J2EE/J2ME Java Development or ColdFusion Development
" Good knowledge in Internet application design
