Installed rpms for 6.5.3 on a RedHat 6.1 instalation.
i386 (pent III)

can start Postgres and brows databases manually .

found postgres script in init.d. symlinked to
/etc/rd.d/rc5.d/S85postgresql

link appears with 777 root root permissions.

boot system to verify auto start. NO go!

run script manually ok.

( I have a simular setup working on another simular system. Everything
looks identical)

Any help would be appreciated.
