Yes, the main point is that the application software vendor (ASV) would
not support the installation unless they had specifically verified it
to work on the particular set of software (app version/OS
version/database version/other integrated software versions).

This is one of the main reasons that Oracle and Microsoft spend so much
time encouraging the ASV market, since they only need to sell it once
and then all their customers have to buy the database too. And also the
main reason why adoption of PostgreSQL will be somewhat slower than its
technical merits deserve.

Its also another reason for thinking about PostgreSQL as a data
warehouse server...since you can always move the data, rather than port
the application.
