Its a very funny installation that ur GRASS has done.

if primary group of posgres is www then data folder
shud not be own by group staff.

i would suggestt that u install pgsql your self from
its install doc and preferebly the 7.3rc2 version.

that would be much simplier & quicker
and digging the real reason behind this funny installation.
