$ dlocate
zlib1g: /usr/lib/
zlib1g: /usr/lib/

/usr/lib/ is a symbolic link (to /usr/lib/ in my
case -- Ubuntu).  Does its target exist?  Try reinstalling zlib1g
(apt-get --reinstall install zlib1g).
