Hmm.  Well, there's always the direct-experiment approach to finding out
whether two directories are the same.  How about some variant of

	touch ./funkyFileName
	if [ -f "$srcdir/funkyFileName" ]
		-- $srcdir is .
	else
		-- $srcdir is not .
	fi
	rm ./funkyFileName
