Hello there,

I have been trying to build PostgreSql 7.0.3 on a win2k box. The
documentation in the admin guide suggests that it is built for Visual C++,
but I have download the WinNT/Cygwin package and am trying to build it from
there.

As a bit of a new starter in the unix/linux world - things are a bit foreign
to me. I wish to build in Win2k so I can then see if the database will
perform as I require before progressing deeper into Mandrake Linux (v7.2)
which I have as part of a dual boot.

The error I get in Cygwin is:
checking whether the C compiler (gcc -O2 ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot
create executables.

I was rather hoping for a dummies guide or a blow by blow account of how to
compile the code under win2k, unless there is a package with the ready built
binaries available? Should I be speaking to you or would Daniel Horak
(<horak(at)sit(dot)plzen-city(dot)cz>) be better (it does state in the admin guide not
to bother those people)?

I suppose the obvious answer is to build it under linux, but my confidence
of using linux to date is rather low. So any further help you could give
would be most appreciated.

Regards
Clifford
