I figured out why I could not find the jdbc6.5-1.1.jar file.
The pertinent parts of my invocation script was:

The CLASSPATH assignment should have been:
> export CLASSPATH=.:$JDKTOP/lib:../jar/jdbc6.5-1.1.jar
My invocation script now finds the jdbc6.5-1.1.jar file.
This might be useful in a FAQ somewhere.
