The DB can be anywhere

Export the PG variables or run the pg_ctl as follows

nohup pg_ctl -o -i -D /wherever/your/data/dir/is start &

My postgresql.conf is located in /usr/local/pgsql/data, so my command 
would be

nohup pg_ctl -o -i -D /usr/local/pgsql/data start &
